Join SARVAC’s Humanitarian Workforce (HWF) Program and help strengthen Canada’s capacity to support Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) responders during emergencies and disasters.

We are expanding the SARVAC HWF Program and are seeking skilled professionals to support a range of operational, training, logistics, technology, finance, administration, and technical functions. These roles will help build and maintain the systems, resources, capabilities, and partnerships needed to support GSAR volunteers and enable effective emergency response across Canada.

The SARVAC HWF Program works with Provincial and Territorial Associations, GSAR teams, Government Agencies, Emergency Management Organizations, and other Stakeholders to strengthen preparedness, response, and operational readiness.

Current Opportunities

We are currently recruiting for a range of SARVAC positions, including:

  • HWF Program Director — Provides strategic and operational leadership for SARVAC’s HWF Program, overseeing program management, priorities, operational readiness, deployment capabilities, budgets, reporting, performance, and stakeholder relationships. The role leads the SARVAC HWF project team and supports the strategic development and long-term sustainability of SARVAC’s national HWF capacity.
  • HWF Program Development Coordinator (Part-Time) — Supports the HWF Program Director with the day-to-day administration, coordination, and ongoing development of the SARVAC HWF Program. The role supports emergency readiness, deployments, training, stakeholder engagement, capacity-building initiatives, program communications, records and reporting, and the continuous improvement of program processes and resources.
  • HWF Operations Coordinator — Supports operational readiness, emergency response coordination, operational planning, and continuous improvement within the SARVAC HWF Program.
  • HWF Training Coordinator — Develops, coordinates, and delivers training programs for emergency management personnel in collaboration with Provincial and Territorial Associations and local teams.
  • HWF Logistics Coordinator — Leads national logistics support, including procurement, inventory, equipment readiness, transportation, and decentralized equipment stashes supporting HWF operations.
  • HWF Data Management Specialist (Part-Time)— Develops and maintains data systems supporting SARVAC HWF operations and Type 3 Wildfire Support Capability, including personnel tracking, training records, equipment readiness, deployment monitoring, dashboards, and reporting.
  • HWF Operational Finance and Administrative Development Coordinator — Supports the development and integration of financial and administrative processes required for SARVAC HWF emergency incident operations, working closely with SARVAC’s Finance and Administration Manager.
  • HWF Operations Technical Writer — Develops and maintains operational documentation, including Concepts of Operations, Standard Operating Procedures, deployment guides, job aids, and other documentation supporting SARVAC’s Operations and Type 3 Wildfire Support Capability.
  • HWF Wildfire Program Manager — Leads the development, coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of Type 3 Wildfire Support Capability, including operational planning, stakeholder engagement, SOPs, training/readiness, and integration with the broader HWF Program.
  • Mental Wellness Coordinator — Oversees SARVAC’s Mental Wellness Program and Peer Mental Wellness Team, including prevention, intervention, post-incident support, training, critical-incident follow-up, external mental-health resources, and mental-wellness policies.

Work With SARVAC’s National Humanitarian Workforce

SARVAC’s HWF positions support the development of a coordinated national capability that can help SARVAC and its partners prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergency incidents.

Depending on the position, responsibilities may include operational coordination, training and exercise development, logistics and equipment readiness, data and technology systems, financial and administrative processes, or the development of operational doctrine and guidance.

Some positions may also be required to assume a secondary Incident Command System (ICS) function during SARVAC HWF taskings and, on an exceptional basis, may be called upon to support emergency deployments.

Employment Opportunities

Positions vary in their work arrangements, responsibilities, qualifications, and compensation. Current postings include remote and hybrid positions, with some roles requiring travel or an on-site presence at SARVAC Headquarters in Paradise, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Salary ranges for the current positions range from $30–$50 per hour, based on experience, with group and health benefits and up to 5% RRSP matching offered for the positions identified in the current job descriptions.
