Nunavut SAR

Nunavut is Canada’s newest Territory, having been officially separated from the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999.  With a population of approximately 32,000, it is the largest of the Province or Territory in Canada.

Major communities in the Territory include the capital, Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet, Cambridge Bay.

Search and Rescue is coordinated through the Government of Nunavut’s Emergency Measures Organization. 2012 saw 178 Search and Rescue calls in the Territory, with annual increases of between 10 to 15 percent since 2006.

With it’s remoteness comes the necessity to focus on prevention and trip planning.
